YMCA brings back Picnic in the Park
A North Tyneside charity is bringing back a popular community event this summer, with plans for live music, family entertainment and fundraising activities in North Shields.
YMCA North Tyneside has confirmed the return of its annual Picnic in the Park, which will take place at Northumberland Square on Saturday, June 6.
Now entering its fourth year, the free community event will run from 10am to 4pm and aims to bring together families, friends and local residents while raising funds to support the charity’s work across the region.
The day will begin with a morning programme of family-friendly activities including children’s rides, entertainers, face painting and community stalls, alongside a tombola and raffle.
From midday, attention will shift to the event’s main stage, where live music performances will take place throughout the afternoon.
Local food and drink traders will also be on site, including a mobile bar.
YMCA North Tyneside welcomed more than 2000 visitors to the event last year, raising over £3500 to support its services, which include supported housing, youth programmes, community meals and wellbeing initiatives.
Organisers hope to build on that success in 2026 by placing a stronger focus on showcasing local talent.
Helen Thompson, director of community and social enterprise at YMCA North Tyneside, said: “Picnic in the Park is about so much more than one day of celebration.
“It is about bringing people together, showcasing the incredible talent we have here in the North East and reminding everyone what community really looks like.
“Every ticket booked, raffle sold and pound raised helps us continue delivering vital services to those who need them most.
“We cannot wait to welcome everyone back to Northumberland Square for what’s set to be our biggest and best event yet.”
Aspiring performers have been invited to submit audition videos for the opportunity to perform on the day, with the community helping to select the final line-up.
Although entry is free, attendees can choose to make a voluntary donation when booking tickets online, with all funds reinvested into YMCA North Tyneside’s programmes for young people and families.
