Developer in glassworks site transformation deal
A developer has secured work to transform an ex-glassworks site into a £7 million leisure scheme.
Building Design Northern is set to create an entertainment and events hub at Harton Quay, in South Shields.
Bosses say the venture could include “multiple food and drink operators and a tap room” on the former Cookson’s Glassworks factory base.
They add design and planning work will take place over the next year.
Richard Marsden, managing director of Sunderland-based Building Design Northern – which oversaw the city’s Sheepfolds Stables leisure space – said: “We’re absolutely delighted to have secured this opportunity.
“The site is steeped in history, and it’s a privilege to play a role in its next chapter.
“We’re particularly excited about the prospect of reigniting the existing chimney, a distinctive symbol of the site’s past, and helping to ensure it remains a landmark for generations to come.”
Councillor Tracey Dixon, leader of South Tyneside Council, added: “This is another hugely exciting moment for South Shields.
“We are delivering real momentum across our town centre and riverside, and this site has always been one of the most important pieces of the jigsaw.
“To have secured a developer with a proven track record shows the confidence investors now have in South Tyneside and in our long‑term regeneration plans.”
