Saltwell Park to mark milestone with festival

Saltwell Park will mark its 150th anniversary with a colourful community parade on Saturday, March 28, forming the finale of a wider Spring Festival running from 12 to 4pm.

Organised by Gateshead Council, the event will feature live music, arts and a range of family-friendly activities, culminating in a 4pm parade around the park’s lake.

The route has been designed to be accessible, ensuring people of all ages can take part or watch.

Local schools, organisations and businesses are being encouraged to join the parade by creating costumes, banners and themed displays.

A programme of free workshops will support participants in the lead-up, alongside a drop-in session on the day.

To further boost involvement, small grants of up to £200 are available to help groups create parade entries.

Councillor Angela Douglas, Gateshead Council’s cabinet member for culture, sport and tourism, said: “Events like the Spring Parade are a wonderful way to bring our community together.

“Saltwell Park has been at the heart of Gateshead for 150 years, and this event celebrates not only the park’s milestone anniversary, but also the creativity, diversity and community spirit of the people who live here.

“I’d encourage local groups, organisations and businesses to take part and help make the parade a memorable celebration.”

The event is part of a wider series of Spring Festivals across Gateshead, supported by funding from the North East Mayor and the North East Combined Authority, celebrating community spirit and seasonal change across the borough.

Community groups, organisations, schools and businesses interested in taking part in the parade and applying for a materials grant should contact: culture@gateshead.gov.uk
