28-home scheme delivered in North Shields

A North Tyneside housing development is helping more people onto the property ladder with the delivery of new affordable homes.

Karbon Homes has completed 28 properties in North Shields, marked by a welcome event attended by mayor Karen Clark and partners including Adderstone Living and North Tyneside Council.

The scheme includes 22 three and four-bedroom houses and six apartments, offered through shared ownership and rent to buy, with rents set at 20 per cent below market rates to support future home ownership.

Designed by Newcastle-based architects IDPartnerships, the development forms part of the Ambition for North Shields regeneration programme, focused on enhancing the town centre, Fish Quay and riverside.

Karbon acquired the site in 2024, with Adderstone Living leading construction.

Mayor Clark said: “It continues to be a priority for us as a council to create more affordable housing opportunities for people in North Tyneside – so we’re absolutely delighted to see this development completed and residents moving in.

“The homes look absolutely fantastic and it was amazing to get to chat to some of the new residents and hear about how they’re settling in.

“Thank you to them for welcoming us into their homes, sharing their stories and how pleased they are to have such beautiful homes in the heart of North Shields.

“Thank you to Karbon Homes and Adderstone Group for all their work to take a site that had been empty for some time and breathe new life into it.”

Scott Martin, executive director of resources at Karbon Homes, added: “It’s fantastic to see the development complete and to meet the first residents who are benefitting from the new homes.

“It’s clear the difference the affordable schemes these homes are available through have made a massive difference, enabling those who had ambitions to get on the property ladder to make that step, and helping those who had been forced to live out of the town, due to the cost of housing, to return.

“Partnerships like this one with North Tyneside Council are key in bringing the number of affordable homes needed in the region to fruition.”

Stephen McCoy, managing director at Adderstone Living, added: “It’s great to see these homes now complete and starting to welcome residents.

“Developments like this are about more than just delivering new houses – they’re about creating places where people can put down roots and where a community can begin to grow.

“Alongside building the homes themselves, we’ve also been pleased to support local initiatives like the North Shields mural project, helping contribute to a neighbourhood that people feel proud to call home.”

The project was supported by Homes England funding and £1.3 million from the North East Combined Authority to prepare the brownfield site for development, contributing to wider plans to deliver new affordable homes across the region.
