Tantara set to spice up Jesmond
A new addition to Newcastle’s hospitality scene is set to open in Jesmond after being formally inaugurated by the city’s Lord Mayor.
Tantara, located in Jesmond, was formally opened ahead of its public launch on Monday (March 23), with lord mayor councillor Henry Gallagher cutting the ribbon at a private ceremony.
The restaurant introduces a concept inspired by the historic cabin cafés of Kolkata and the wider Bengal region, blending heritage with a modern dining experience.
Its interiors draw on vintage travel and historic trading routes, layering rich textures and storytelling to create an intimate, transportive and refined setting.
At its core is a menu celebrating the culinary traditions of Bengal, spanning India and Bangladesh, with dishes rooted in heritage and delivered with depth, balance and technical precision.
Shah Lalon Amin, representing the family behind the restaurant, said: “It was a real honour to welcome the lord mayor, councillor Henry Gallagher, to Tantara and to have him officially cut the ribbon ahead of our opening.
“Tantara is very personal to us.
“It reflects our heritage, our family story, and the Bengal we’ve grown up with.
“We’ve followed in our father’s footsteps – he came to this country with very little and built a life through hospitality.
“This restaurant is our way of continuing that journey, in our own voice.
“He would have been incredibly proud to see this day.
“To be able to share this with Newcastle – a city that has supported us throughout – means a great deal to our family.”
