Historic bridge reopens after repairs
A County Durham bridge has reopened following refurbishment works to improve safety and extend its lifespan.
Durham County Council has completed upgrades to Causeway Bridge in Wolsingham, a structure dating back to 1894.
The project addressed age-related damage, with works including waterproofing the bridge deck, resurfacing the carriageway and repairing key structural elements.
Painting and protective measures have also been carried out to prevent future deterioration.
The improvements are designed to safeguard the long-term integrity of the bridge, reducing the need for ongoing maintenance.
Councillor Tim McGuinness, Durham County Council Cabinet member for rural, farming and transport, said: “We’re delighted that the Causeway Bridge in Wolsingham has reopened after our refurbishment works which will ensure the structure is protected, improved, and ready for the future.
“We’d like to thank residents, businesses and road users for their patience and cooperation throughout the works, the support has been invaluable.
“It’s fantastic that this important route is back in use.”
