Stanley Bus Station revamp set to begin
A County Durham bus station is set for a major refurbishment to improve accessibility, safety and passenger experience.
Stanley Bus Station will benefit from a £2.5 million upgrade after Durham County Council secured funding from the North East Combined Authority.
Work is due to begin on April 7, with completion expected by autumn 2026.
The station will remain open throughout, although bus services will operate from different stands during each phase of the project.
Officials say the scheme will deliver improvements across the site, including upgraded digital passenger information displays, new seating layouts and a designated wheelchair area to enhance accessibility.
Safety will also be improved through new lighting and CCTV, while updated flooring and widened access routes will support passengers with visual and mobility impairments.
Councillor Tim McGuinness, Durham County Council’s cabinet member for rural, farming and transport, said: “These refurbishments will bring vital improvements to Stanley Bus Station so it can better serve residents and visitors, and alternating bus stands will ensure that the site can remain fully operational while works take place.
“We’re pleased to have been able to carry out work on the building so quickly and that residents and visitors can expect a more modern, accessible and safer bus station when the redevelopment is complete.”
The refurbishment forms part of wider efforts to modernise public transport infrastructure across the region through the Bus Service Improvement Plan, aimed at increasing reliability, safety and ease of use for passengers.
