Rethinking leadership and organisational culture

A North East university is bringing together senior leaders to explore how organisations can adapt to changing workplace expectations and challenges.

Northumbria University will host a free half-day event, Culture in Conversation: Rethinking Leadership & Organisational Practice, at Newcastle Business School on April 29, aimed at senior managers and organisational leaders across the region.

The session will focus on how organisations can build fair, high-performing and learning-driven cultures, with speakers including Matt Beeton, chief executive officer at Port of Tyne; Joanne Davidson, deputy director workforce, organisational effectiveness and learning at the Mersey Care NHS Foundation Trust; and Charlotte Cumiskey, organisational development manager at Northumbria University.

Additional breakout sessions will be delivered by Vandewiele UK Ltd, Mersey Care NHS Foundation Trust and Professor Gavin Oxburgh, professor of police science at Northumbria University, covering topics such as organisational growth, restorative culture practices and effective communication.

The programme will explore key themes including leadership behaviours, psychological safety, wellbeing and the role of culture as a strategic driver, reflecting the complex challenges facing organisations today.

It will examine how leaders can build fair, high-performing and learning-focused workplaces, while embedding approaches that support trust, resilience and long-term success.

Designed as a highly interactive experience, the event will combine keynote talks, breakout sessions and panel discussions, alongside opportunities for peer-to-peer exchange.

Attendees will be encouraged to challenge assumptions, share real-world experiences and gain practical tools and fresh perspectives that can be applied within their own organisations.

Organisers say the event responds to growing pressures on organisations, including economic uncertainty, evolving regulatory demands and the accelerating impact of technology, alongside rising expectations from employees around purpose, wellbeing and inclusion.

Places are free but limited, with the event designed to encourage meaningful peer connections and provide practical tools to strengthen organisational culture.

Culture in Conversation: Rethinking Leadership & Organisational Practice takes place on Wednesday, April 29, 1:00pm - 4:15pm, at Newcastle Business School, Northumbria University, Newcastle upon Tyne.
