Barrier secures contract on NZT Power project
A North East engineering firm is set to play a key role in a flagship low-carbon energy project, driving jobs and regional growth.
Barrier Group, headquartered in Wallsend and with operations in Teesside, has secured a contract on the Net Zero Teesside Power project, which is set to become the world’s first commercial-scale gas-fired power station with carbon capture and storage.
Awarded by Technip Energies, the contract will see Barrier deliver the design, engineering and supply of heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems for the turbine hall at the new power station.
The project forms part of a major 742MW development expected to power around 1.3 million homes while capturing up to two million tonnes of carbon dioxide each year once operational.
Barrier’s work is being led from its Haverton Hill facility, where its HVAC engineering team is overseeing the delivery of specialist systems critical to maintaining safe operating conditions within the turbine hall.
The contract has already supported job creation, with new engineering roles added and further recruitment expected as the project progresses.
Kevin Judson, operations director at Barrier Group, said: “Being involved in NZT Power is a significant contract award for Barrier and aligns directly with our strategic growth plans.
“It reflects the strength of our engineering capability and the contribution businesses in the Tees Valley make to nationally important infrastructure projects.”
“This contract enables continued investment in our people and yard facilities, while supporting carbon capture infrastructure that is critical to the UK’s net zero ambitions and the long-term future of heavy industry.”
The wider scheme, delivered by a consortium including Technip Energies, GE Vernova and Balfour Beatty, is expected to create and support more than 3000 jobs during construction.
