Royal visit crowns Ad Gefrin success
A Northumberland distillery and cultural attraction has welcomed a royal visitor as it continues to build its reputation as a leading heritage and tourism destination.
Ad Gefrin Anglo-Saxon Museum and Whisky Distillery in Wooler hosted HRH The Duke of Gloucester following its recent third anniversary and a string of industry accolades, including being named North East Tourism’s Small Visitor Attraction of the Year.
An architect by profession, the Duke toured the site with co-founders Alan and Eileen Ferguson, taking a particular interest in the building’s design.
The venue has received multiple honours from the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), recognising its architecture, sustainability and overall impact.
The visit also highlighted the work of Northumbrian architect Richard Elphick, whose design for Ad Gefrin earned the RIBA’s North East Architect of the Year award in 2025 and marks the final project in his career.
During the visit, the Duke met staff, stakeholders and members of the local community, highlighting the attraction’s strong regional ties.
He was also presented with a copy of Ad Gefrin: Brian Hope Taylor and his Quest by archaeologist Roger Miket of The Gefrin Trust, which manages the nearby original 7th century Yeavering site, an Anglo-Saxon royal palace complex that inspired the museum.
The occasion was marked with the unveiling of a commemorative plaque, capping a milestone moment for the award-winning venue as it continues to attract national attention.
