Ashington regeneration plans gather pace
A Northumberland town centre regeneration project is progressing with plans to deliver new leisure facilities and improved town centre access.
Northumberland County Council has approved the next phase of the £36 million transformation of Ashington, with work on a new cinema and restaurant complex at Portland Park due to start this spring.
Advance Northumberland has appointed Robertson Construction Group to deliver the scheme, which will feature five cinema screens, a family-focused leisure space and two restaurant units, creating a new destination for residents and visitors.
The cinema will be operated by REEL Cinema once complete.
Councillor Richard Wearmouth, cabinet member for business, growth and regeneration at Northumberland County Council, said: “The cinema and restaurants project represents a significant investment in Portland Park, strengthening the town centre as a destination for entertainment, dining and socialising.
“It’s a real vote of confidence for Ashington, with these two projects building on the wider regeneration in the area including a new rail station and passenger rail line and a new college campus.
Ashington Central County councillor Caroline Ball added: “It’s good news to see that spades will be going into the ground shortly on these key sites, along with a variety of other works progressing in the town.”
The development forms part of the wider Regenerating Ashington Programme, aimed at strengthening the town’s retail and leisure offer.
Work is also set to begin this summer on the Wansbeck Square Gateway, improving access between Ashington Rail Station and the high street with new pathways, landscaping and public spaces.
John Johnston, Ashington Town Forum chair added: “It’s great to see these key milestones being achieved and change happening on the ground.
“Thanks to everyone who has taken the time to help develop these exciting plans and for local people’s support while the work is happening.”
