Development base adds 'milestone' hydrogen hub

A research and innovation base has bolstered operations with new apparatus.

The Materials Processing Institute has designed and installed a hydrogen testing hub.

Officials say the move “marks a significant milestone” in the Middlesbrough-based operator’s hydrogen research and industrial decarbonisation work.

They add the test rig – capable of operating at temperatures up to 1650°C – will “support industry in accelerating hydrogen technology adoption” by boosting material compatibility and degradation studies and aiding trials on hydrogen-based processes.

Dr Hichem Hakka, head of energy and process decarbonisation, said: “Achieving net-zero in industry requires proven, scalable solutions.

“This new hydrogen testing capability allows us to generate the critical evidence needed by asset owners, original equipment manufacturers and materials developers to confidently transition to hydrogen-based processes.

“We are addressing one of the key barriers to adoption, which is understanding how materials and components behave in real operating conditions.”
