'Long-awaited' £60 million road upgrade gets boost
Plans for a “long-awaited” £60 million coastal town road upgrade have moved forward.
Northumberland County Council has backed a blueprint to develop a relief road in Blyth.
Officials say the work will create a new dual carriageway, widen an existing single carriageway and create a link road between Chase Farm Drive and Ogle Drive.
They add it will also include new bus stops, cycleways and footpaths along the A1061.
A decision on Government funding to support the scheme is expected later this year.
Councillor Richard Wearmouth, deputy leader and cabinet member with responsibility for active travel, said: “We have been pushing for this project for a long time, and it’s great to see these plans being taken forward.
“We know the traffic in and around Blyth can be a real problem.
“This is a hugely important project and we’re hopeful the Government will be providing the remainder of the funding needed to bring this to fruition.”
