Freight boom drives depot expansion

A North East logistics firm is expanding its operations after a surge in pallet freight volumes driven by growing demand across the sector.

Family-run Moody Logistics and Storage has increased the size of its cross-deck loading facility in Cramlington by 3500sq ft, taking the total space to 16,000sq ft.

The expansion at its Bolam Business Park headquarters follows a three-fold rise in palletised freight, driven by its growing role within national pallet networks and wider e-commerce demand, enabling the business to handle higher volumes more efficiently.

Additional capacity has been created by integrating an existing storage area into the cross-deck operation, alongside removing internal walls, reconfiguring the layout and installing two new warehouse doors.

The updated setup allows goods to be processed more quickly, with all loading taking place under cover.

First opened in 2017, the cross-deck facility plays a central role in the company’s operations, allowing goods to be sorted and redistributed without the need for long-term storage.

Managing director Caroline Moody said: “We’ve experienced a three-fold increase in palletised freight in recent years.

“When our cross-deck facility first opened, we were handling just over 100 pallets daily, a figure that has now risen to around 350 pallets.

“It was increasingly challenging to manage that volume within the existing space, so we increased capacity to ensure the environment remains safe for the team operating forklifts and loading vehicles.

“We’re extremely proud of our cross-deck facility because everything can be loaded under cover, an important factor in maintaining the integrity of our customers’ freight and ensuring goods move quickly, safely and securely through our network.”
