Contractor delight at 'landmark' Steel City work
A building contractor has secured a city residential deal.
GMI Construction Group is set to create 125 apartments at Sheffield’s Park Hill.
The work marks the fourth phase of the Steel City scheme and will include public spaces, electric vehicle charging points and bicycle storage.
Overseen by joint venture partners Urban Splash and Places for People, the project has already completed 455 homes and delivered more than 50,000sq ft of commercial workspace.
A fifth phase – which has planning consent – is set to add 105 one to four-bed apartments, duplexes and townhouses, and a further 2000sq ft of business space.
Ed Weston, regional director for Yorkshire at GMI Construction Group, which has an office in Leeds, said: “Park Hill holds enormous architectural and cultural importance for Sheffield and the wider region.
“Projects of this nature demand a sensitive and experienced approach, and our strong track record in refurbishment and urban regeneration makes us well placed to work with an iconic and much-loved landmark.”
Nilam Buchanan, Places for People regional managing director for central and north developments, said: “We’re proud of what’s been achieved at Park Hill so far, creating new homes and public spaces in a setting with real heritage.”
Sian Stanhope, Urban Splash development manager for Park Hill, added: “Our ambition has always been to create a vibrant, mixed community; this milestone brings us closer to delivering that vision.”
