Students gear up for Ducati challenge
A North East STEM initiative is revving up young talent with a new competition blending engineering and creativity.
The North East STEM Foundation (NESF), in partnership with Ducati UK, has launched its 2026 ‘Build the Villain’s Machine’ challenge for students aged 11 to 16.
Participants are tasked with reimagining Ducati motorcycles, transforming models such as the Panigale, Diavel or Monster into high-performance machines with unique designs and backstories.
Teams will combine technical research with creative thinking, developing enhanced features, materials and visual concepts as part of their entries.
The winning team will receive an exclusive Ducati and Silverstone performance experience, including a visit to Ducati UK headquarters and a behind-the-scenes tour of the Silverstone Circuit.
Each school can enter one team of 8-12 students, with submissions judged on engineering insight, creativity and presentation.
Tania Cooper MBE, chair of NESF, said: “This competition is about inspiring young people to see engineering as creative, innovative and full of possibility.
“By partnering with Ducati, we’re giving students in the North East a unique opportunity to connect classroom learning with real-world performance engineering.
“The chance to visit Ducati and experience Silverstone is truly special.”
Fabrizio Cazzoli, managing director of Ducati UK, added: “We are proud to support the North East STEM Foundation and its work to inspire young people across the region.
“Encouraging future talent to explore engineering, design, and innovation is something we are deeply passionate about.”
The competition is now open, with entries closing on June 19, offering students a chance to explore real-world engineering and innovation.
