Mint Stitches weaves wellbeing boost
A North East social enterprise is tackling modern burnout by blending traditional craft with a focus on wellbeing and community connection.
Mint Stitches CIC, founded by Cramlington-based AI strategist Dr Yulia Dzenkovska, is using embroidery workshops to help individuals manage stress, isolation and digital overload.
Launched alongside her work supporting businesses and charities with AI, the initiative reintroduces slow, mindful craft through accessible embroidery techniques such as cross stitch and tent stitch.
The concept was shaped through community sessions in Sunderland and Cramlington, where adaptations including plastic canvas, wool and larger needles made the activity more inclusive for those with reduced dexterity, visual impairments and beginners.
The simplified approach allows participants to complete pieces in hours, supporting engagement among neurodivergent individuals and those with learning differences.
Designs draw on North East heritage, featuring regional landmarks and cultural themes.
Alongside skill-building, workshops provide social spaces that encourage connection and conversation.
Mint Stitches is now expanding through partnerships and seeking funding to widen access across communities.
Yulia said: “Artificial intelligence is helping us become more productive than ever.
“But instead of using that extra time to rest, we’re filling it with even more work.
“We’re more overwhelmed than ever.
“We need something to replace doom scrolling.
“Something that helps us switch off, even for a little while.”
