College fuels ambition with Formula 1 visit
A County Durham college has put students in the driving seat with a Formula 1-inspired designed to showcase high-performance careers.
East Durham College has welcomed Alpine Formula 1 lead machinist John Allison to deliver an interactive session on careers in motorsport, giving around 150 students insight into high-performance engineering.
The visit, a first for the college, saw students from a range of disciplines explore the design and manufacturing behind F1 cars, while gaining a clearer understanding of career pathways within the industry.
The session forms part of the college’s wider strategy to connect students with leading employers and broaden future opportunities.
Connor Allison, progression coach at East Durham College, who organised the visit, said: “Bringing someone from Alpine Formula 1 into college has been an incredible opportunity for our students.
“For many, this is the first time they’ve had direct insight into a world-class industry like Formula 1, and you could see how engaged and inspired they were throughout.
“It really helps them connect what they’re learning in the classroom to real, exciting career pathways.”
Beyond motorsport, students at the Houghall Campus are also preparing to showcase their work at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, supported by expert guidance from floral designer Simon Lycett.
Alongside these initiatives, the college is continuing to invest in campus developments and facilities, reinforcing its commitment to delivering high-quality learning environments and equipping students with the skills needed for future careers.
Scott Bullock, principal and chief executive of East Durham College, added: “We are absolutely committed to putting our students in the driving seat when it comes to their futures.
“Experiences like this bring learning to life, build ambition, and show students exactly what they can achieve with the right skills, support, and determination.
“Our investment in Houghall Campus is about much more than buildings, it’s about creating an environment where students can thrive.
“Combined with opportunities like Formula 1 engagement and Chelsea Flower Show participation, we are building a college experience that is ambitious, inspiring, and genuinely life-changing.
“We want every student to leave East Durham College with confidence, direction, and the belief that they can achieve exceptional futures.
“That is exactly what we are working to deliver every single day.”
