Salko extends role at landmark mine project
A North Yorkshire engineering specialist is set to build on its role at a flagship mining project after securing a contract extension.
Salko UK has agreed a one-year extension with Redpath Deilmann to continue delivering mechanical labour at the Woodsmith Mine in North Yorkshire, set to become Europe’s deepest mineshaft.
The firm has been involved in the project since 2019, providing full mechanical and electrical installation services across both surface and deep sub-surface infrastructure.
During the initial phase, Salko deployed an 80-strong team to deliver complex works including pipework, ventilation, shaft services and power systems.
Sim Sharphouse, operations manager at Salko UK, said: “We’re proud to have played a crucial role in this globally significant project based in Yorkshire.
“Extending our contract is a proud moment for our team and serves as a testament to our continued partnership.
“Across the year, our team of specialists on-site will all be based within the local area, reinforcing our commitment to regional growth and skills development in North Yorkshire.”
Woodsmith Mine, located in the North York Moors National Park, will produce POLY4, a low-carbon fertiliser designed to support sustainable agriculture.
Once operational, the site is expected to produce up to 13 million tonnes annually, highlighting the scale and importance of the project to both the regional economy and environmental goals.
