Harbour Day marks historic RNLI milestone
A Northumberland coastal town is preparing to celebrate a major milestone in its maritime history with a community-wide event.
Blyth Harbour Day will take place on Saturday, May 2, marking the 200th anniversary of the town’s RNLI Lifeboat Station with a programme of activities along the quayside.
A key moment of the day will be the unveiling of a Blue Heritage Plaque by the mayor of Blyth, councillor David Swinhoe, recognising two centuries of lifesaving service.
Established in 1826, the station has played a vital role in protecting those at sea, with crews earning multiple gallantry medals for acts of bravery.
The event will bring together residents and visitors with a mix of on-the-water demonstrations, including RNLI on-the-water demonstrations and a Parade of Sail from Northumberland Yacht Club.
Live music, street food and market stalls will add to the atmosphere, alongside open access to local attractions including the Blyth Tall Ship and its historic vessel Williams II, as well as Newcastle University’s research vessel The Princess Royal.
Visitors will also be able to explore behind the scenes, with opportunities to step aboard and learn more about the work taking place along the quayside.
Free family activities will run throughout the day, including crafts, storytelling and kite-making sessions with the Pallas Family Flyers, creating a lively and inclusive programme for all ages.
The celebration will showcase Blyth’s strong maritime identity while recognising the enduring commitment of volunteers who have safeguarded lives at sea for generations.
