Tecomet triumphs at metal industry awards

A Sheffield-based manufacturer has been recognised at a leading industry awards ceremony celebrating excellence across the UK metalforming sector.

Tecomet, which produces components for the medical, orthopaedic and aerospace markets, secured the HSE Initiative Award at the Confederation of British Metalforming (CBM) Awards, held in front of 150 people at the ICC in Birmingham.

Judges highlighted the company’s approach to safety and wellbeing, particularly its efforts to engage employees both in and outside the workplace.

Initiatives including strong links with local support services and an annual Safety Day were credited with reinforcing a culture of trust, care and responsibility across the workforce.

Geraldine Bolton, chief executive of CBM, said: “The last twelve months have been full of challenges for our members and the metal sector in general, yet despite economic volatility, we have seen some fantastic growth stories and real tales of innovation and a commitment to sustainable manufacturing.

“Keeping staff in our sector safe is an important challenge and Tecomet has delivered a blueprint for putting its workforce first, typified by its hugely successful Safety Day.

“Tonight was a fantastic celebration of the UK metalforming sector, bringing together companies from all over the country, representing manufacturers operating in more than 20 different markets.”

The awards, attended by more than 150 industry professionals, recognise achievements across a sector representing over 200 manufacturers and around 75,000 employees nationwide.

Elsewhere on the night, West Bromwich-based William King, which specialises in high-tensile steel, aluminium, light gauge processing, electrical steels and niche metal coatings, was named Company of the Year, with judges praising its commitment to decarbonisation through investment in on-site solar energy.

The firm also secured the ‘Energy Efficiency of the Year’ award.

Sertec Group, an automotive supplier, was also a double winner, including the Employee Engagement Award, recognising its focus on workforce development and retention, alongside significant charitable fundraising efforts, while Sertec’s Jack Neal was named Apprentice of the Year for his technical contributions and development.

Speaking at the awards, Steve Morley, president of the CBM, said: “It is great to see so much new talent coming through the ranks and being drawn to pursuing a career in this demanding but ultimately rewarding career.

“Jack has already delivered massive tangible benefits to the Sertec Group and it was brilliant seeing the impact the other finalists have had with their respective employers.

“It makes you realise how important it is to fight for current metalforming manufacturers, so the apprentices now can turn into the leaders of the future.”
