Boutique aparthotel launches in Durham
A North East property developer has launched a high-end aparthotel in Durham following a multi-million-pound transformation of a historic city centre building.
Aykley Group has unveiled The Sanctuary Knocker, a £2.3 million boutique aparthotel on Court Lane, inspired by Durham Cathedral’s medieval sanctuary knocker.
The development blends heritage features with contemporary design across four themed suites.
Each apartment draws on a fictional adventurer’s travels, with interiors influenced by destinations including Marrakesh, Peking and Andorra.
The four suites feature high-spec kitchens, spa-style bathrooms and integrated technology, alongside views of Durham Cathedral.
Guests can access tailored experiences, including chauffeur-driven supercar transfers, in-room Champagne service and bespoke celebration packages.
The scheme includes the £815,000 acquisition of the former Court Inn and a £1.5 million refurbishment of its upper floors.
The ground floor will house The Court, a bar and restaurant led by local operators behind venues including The Drunken Duck and The Grey Owl, offering a refined dining and drinks experience.
Imad Ali, chief executive of Newcastle-based Aykley Group, said: “The Sanctuary Knocker creates an unforgettable experience, not just a place to stay.
“We’ve taken inspiration from global travel to deliver something completely unique to the city.
“Each suite tells its own story, allowing guests to step into a different world while enjoying the best in comfort and service.
“This investment reflects our confidence in Durham as a growing destination and our ambition to raise the bar for luxury accommodation across the region.”
