Durham University hockey team makes history
A North East university sports team has achieved a historic breakthrough, securing a top-tier league finish in its debut season.
Durham University Women’s Hockey Team has become the first university side and the first northern team to reach the top four of the Women’s Premier Division.
The achievement comes in their first season competing at the top level of English hockey.
Following promotion after winning the North Division last year, the team entered the league aiming to compete and develop.
However, consistent performances saw them exceed expectations, securing a top four finish rarely achieved by newly promoted sides.
A decisive match against the University of Birmingham saw Durham come from behind to equalise before winning 3–2 in a penalty shootout, confirming their place at the Premier Division Finals Weekend in Surbiton.
The squad features a strong international presence, with players representing England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland.
Led by head coach Poppy Martin, who secured promotion in her first year, the team will now compete for a place in next season’s Euro Hockey League, marking a significant milestone for university sport in the North.
Durham Hockey president Robin Wilson said: “I could not be prouder to be part of this team.
“As the most northern team in Division One – never mind the Premier League – I hope this achievement attracts even more talent to the North.
“Their work ethic, togetherness and genuine friendship are what set them apart.
“It’s a culture you want to be part of.”
