Restoration work begins on historic hall
A historic North East building is set for restoration after significant fire damage.
Work will begin in May to repair the Grade II-listed Henderson Old Hall in High Heaton, Newcastle, which was badly damaged by fire nearly three years ago.
The project will focus on restoring the building’s external structure, including a new roof, windows and doors.
The University’s Estates Team has worked with insurers, the local authority and consultants to assess the damage and ensure the site is safe.
Contractor Robertson has now been appointed to carry out the works, which are expected to take between 12 and 18 months.
Repairs will include rebuilding parts of the façade, restoring structural elements and addressing internal damage caused by water, alongside electrical upgrades.
The restoration represents the first phase in plans to bring the building back into use, with discussions ongoing about its future role.
A Newcastle University spokesperson said: “We’re really pleased that work to start to repair Henderson Old Hall is now able to begin.
“Our immediate priority is to ensure the building is permanently weatherproof and watertight, while carrying out the repairs with the care and sensitivity that a historic building like Henderson Hall requires.”
