Freight Island set for Newcastle launch
A new food, drink and entertainment destination is preparing to open in Newcastle city centre ahead of a summer packed with live music and World Cup screenings.
Freight Island Newcastle will officially open on June 11 at Eldon Square, transforming a 60,000sq ft rooftop space into what is expected to become one of the city’s largest leisure venues.
Designed as an all-day social destination, the development will combine independent food traders, bars, live music and large-scale event programming across multiple indoor and outdoor spaces.
The venue’s weekly schedule will focus heavily on the North East music scene, with emerging regional artists performing during Thursday night sessions and DJ collective takeovers planned for Fridays.
Saturday events, branded Drink, Dance. Disco, will centre around headline DJ performances supported by local acts, with the venue’s official opening party set to take place on 13 June.
Freight Island will also host a month-long World Cup Social between June 17 and July 19, screening matches across ten HD screens positioned throughout the venue, including beneath the retractable roof of The Plant Room.
Organisers say the concept has been designed to go beyond a traditional fan zone, with table bookings, food and drink packages, family-friendly spaces and appearances from Newcastle United football legends planned throughout the tournament.
Food and drink will form a major part of the experience, with 12 independent kitchens and three bars operating across the site.
The food line-up includes Newcastle brands such as I Scream for Pizza, Meat:Stack, Miso and FAB Bakery, alongside other regional operators serving Asian fusion, Greek-inspired dishes, Caribbean food and desserts.
Opening hours will run from Thursday to Sunday, with late-night opening until 1am on Fridays and Saturdays.
Reservations are now open at www.freightislandnewcastle.com.
