New chapter begins at The Mount

A landmark York property is being transformed into luxury family homes as restoration work begins on one of the city’s best-known historic buildings.

Property developer Oakgate Group has started work at The Mount, formerly The Mount Royale Hotel, to create two high-end villas within the Grade II-listed property.

The development will see the building restored into Daresbury and Beech Villa, returning the site to residential use for the first time in decades.

Originally built in 1834 as grand family homes, the properties will combine period features with modern layouts and contemporary living standards.

Located less than a mile from York Minster, the scheme is expected to become one of the city’s most prestigious residential developments.

Each villa will feature generous living accommodation, private walled gardens and parking, with the restoration designed to preserve the building’s historic character while introducing updated interiors.

The homes will sit alongside two contemporary neighbouring properties, known as 1 & 2 The Mount Gardens, which have already been sold subject to contract.

Situated close to Micklegate Bar, York railway station and York Racecourse, the development offers access to the city’s restaurants, cultural attractions and schools.

Richard France, managing director at Wetherby-based Oakgate Group, said: “Starting on site at The Mount is a hugely exciting milestone.

“This is a building of real historic importance to York, and our ambition is to restore it with the care it deserves while creating two exceptional homes fit for modern family living.

“Daresbury and Beech Villa represent a genuinely rare opportunity to own a prestigious home in one of York’s most desirable locations.

“With immediate access to everything the city has to offer, The Mount presents an unrivalled combination of heritage, convenience and prestige.”

The Mount is being marketed by Croft Residential and Carter Jonas.

Toby Cockcroft, at Croft Residential, added: “Homes of this quality, scale and heritage in such a central York location are exceptionally rare.

“The strong early demand already seen at The Mount reflects the appeal of the scheme, and Daresbury and Beech Villa offer buyers a unique opportunity to secure a distinctive family home in the heart of the city.”

David Beattie, at Carter Jonas, added: “The Mount is one of the most significant residential opportunities York has seen in a generation.

“The location is simply unmatched; just moments from Micklegate Bar, the Knavesmire and the Minster, with everything the city has to offer on the doorstep.

“What makes Daresbury and Beech Villa truly exceptional is the sheer scale on offer – and the fact that buyers coming in now have the rare opportunity to put their own stamp on every detail, from fittings to finishes.

“That combination of heritage, space and personalisation is almost impossible to find anywhere in York.”
