Oliver Valvetek seals royal recognition

A North West engineering firm has received national recognition following the development of an innovative subsea valve.

Oliver Valvetek, part of the Oliver Valves Group, has received a King’s Award for Enterprise for Innovation after designing a new type of seal for subsea valves used in extreme offshore environments.

The seal, described as unique within the market, enables valves to operate reliably at pressures ranging from 5000 to 20,000 psi and at depths of up to 4000 metres.

Since launching three years ago, the innovation has generated more than £6.8 million in orders and strengthened the company’s position within the global subsea energy market.

Nick Howard, engineering director, who was central to the product’s development, said: “The subsea market is extremely niche and success relies on long-term relationships and technical credibility.

“We have solved a recognised problem and turned a market challenge into a long-term competitive advantage.

“We are absolutely thrilled to have been recognised with this King’s Award.

“Apart from the commercial impact, the success of the project has fostered immense pride and motivation across the entire team.”

Founded in 1979 by engineer Dr Michael Oliver OBE DL, who remains actively involved in day-to-day operations in his role as chairman, Oliver Valves is one of just 185 organisations nationally to receive a King’s Award this year.

The business specialises in precision valves for mission-critical applications across the energy sector, including subsea pipelines transporting oil, gas, hydrogen and chemicals.

Oliver Valves, which is headquartered in Knutsford and also has offices in Aberdeen, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore and Dubai, employs more than 250 people, generates annual turnover of around £100 million and serves customers in over 50 countries through its network of sales and distribution centres.

Michael added: “This is the fourth time we have received such recognition.

“This latest accolade is testament to the excellence, creativity and tenacity of our engineers.

“Personally, I’m extremely pleased that a business which started in my one car garage in Cheshire 45 years ago is still privately owned and able to compete on a global scale.”
