HI NENC appoints clinical director

Health Innovation North East and North Cumbria has appointed Mark Henderson as clinical director.

Mark succeeds Professor Julia Newton, who is retiring after nine years with the organisation.

Previously associate director within the health improvement team, Mark brings extensive experience across the health and life sciences sector.

In his new role, he will lead programmes supporting the adoption of evidence-based innovation across the NHS and wider healthcare system.

Mark said: “I am really pleased to be taking on the role of clinical director at HI NENC and look forward to building on the strong work already in place.

“I’m passionate about putting high-quality, evidence-based and cost-effective innovations into practice, because I’ve seen the difference they can make.

“I believe this work can have a real impact on people’s health, helping to reduce inequalities, improve patient safety, and support the growth of the region’s health and life sciences sector.”

Nicola Hutchinson, chief executive for HI NENC, added: “I would like to say a huge thank you to Julia for her significant contribution over the years and wish her all the very best in her retirement.

“Mark will play a pivotal role in strengthening our clinical leadership and shaping how we support the adoption and spread of innovation across the region.

“I’m very pleased he is taking on this role and confident he will make a significant impact.”

Professor Newton added: “I joined the Academic Health Science Network, as it was then known, in 2017 and the last nine years have been some of the best of my career.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed my time with HI NENC and really believe that we have made a difference to the people that we serve in so many ways.

“I am very proud of what we have achieved, from more people receiving treatment to reduce their cardiovascular risk because of our national lipid programme, to increasing the use of bone strengthening therapies in people at risk of osteoporosis; the examples are many.

“I am confident that under Mark’s leadership, these programmes will continue to thrive and deliver health benefits for people across the region and beyond.”
