Newcastle plant builds new crawler excavator
A North East manufacturing facility has begun production of a new generation of advanced machinery, supporting hundreds of skilled engineering roles in the region.
Komatsu Europe has produced the first UK-built PC220 crawler excavator at its Newcastle site, marking a significant milestone as the factory approaches its 40th anniversary.
More than 200 employees, including 21 apprentices, are now involved in production of the excavator, which the manufacturer describes as its most technologically advanced model to date.
Designed to improve performance, safety and operator comfort, the PC220 also strengthens Komatsu’s European supply capabilities by bringing production closer to customers.
To support the new production line, Komatsu UK has introduced advanced manufacturing systems at the Newcastle facility, including precision scanning equipment and laser-based assembly technology.
Workers have also received training in new digital tools reflecting the increasingly software-led nature of modern construction machinery.
Bosses say the investment reinforces Komatsu’s long-term commitment to skilled manufacturing in the North East while supporting future engineering jobs and apprenticeships in the region.
Paul Dickinson, crawler excavator product manager at Komatsu Europe, said: “This milestone demonstrates Komatsu’s ongoing confidence in the North East and the capabilities of our people.
“Producing our most advanced machine here highlights the quality, expertise and commitment that exists within our UK workforce.
“At Komatsu UK, our customers and distributors value the advantages of local European production.
“By manufacturing closer to our markets, we not only shorten supply lead times but also significantly reduce product mileage and associated CO₂ emissions.
“Our UK facility amplifies Komatsu’s unwavering commitment to quality and reliability, while reinforcing our core principle of creating value together with our customers.”
