A week in the life... Lee Climpson

Lee Climpson, partner and production director at London-based  TV commercial and video production company Transmission, provides an insight into his typical working week, highlighting how he balances commercial sector demands with life outside the office.

Monday: What gets you motivated for the start of the working week?

I genuinely like Mondays. It’s a reset and a clean slate.

What motivates me is movement. I don’t like stagnation, whether that’s in a project, a relationship or the business.

Monday is about asking ‘where are we pushing forward? What are we improving? What are we delivering this week?’

In production, the pace never really stops.

There’s always a script evolving, a production in progress or an edit being polished.

That forward motion gives me energy. If we’re progressing, I’m motivated.

Tuesday: The diary is full of meetings and commitments – how do you balance such responsibilities with productivity?

I’ve learned the hard way that a full diary can trick you into thinking you’ve had a productive day.

If I’m back-to-back, I try to stay really clear on outcomes – Why are we in this meeting? What decision needs to be made? What moves us forward as a result?

My role now isn’t just ‘doing the work’, it’s helping other people do their best work.

Productivity is often about clearing a path, making a call quickly or giving clarity so someone else can move at speed.

If I’ve helped the team move faster, that’s a good day.

Wednesday: Halfway there – how do you stay focused and re-energise yourself for the days to come?

Midweek is usually where you feel the weight of it all.

Deadlines stacking up, edits in flux and stakeholders with opinions.

For me, the reset comes from getting under the hood of a production; watching an idea come to life and seeing a shoot evolve into something real is the bit I love.

I’ll also try to create a bit of headspace, even if it’s just a proper walk or switching context for an hour.

Energy is everything in creative businesses.

If I’m flat, it spreads. If I’m energised, that spreads too.

Thursday: The weekend draws closer – how do you remain on top of your to-do list as the end of the week gets nearer?

Thursday is about discipline.

It’s easy to mentally drift towards the weekend, but I try to focus on landing things properly.

I’d rather finish fewer things well than carry half-done tasks into Monday.

There’s something powerful about closing loops before the week comes to an end.

It keeps the business sharp and stops that creeping sense of chaos.

Friday: The last day – how do you approach Fridays, and how do you unwind over the weekend?

Fridays are about closure and people.

I like making sure nothing critical is hanging and that the team feels clear heading into next week. A calm Friday sets up a strong Monday.

Then I switch off.  And it’s important that this is done properly.

The weekend is family, perspective and a bit of fun.

Whether that’s time at home, doing something with the kids or zoning out on a game for an hour, it’s about refuelling.

If you don’t reset, Monday hits hard. And I’d rather hit it with energy.
