Surveying firm looks to scale at BIC

A Sunderland property consultancy is expanding its operations after securing new office space and launching a specialist service for landlords and investors.

The North East Surveying Co has taken a dedicated office at the North East BIC as part of plans to grow its client offering and support regional property investors navigating changing regulations.

Founded in 2023 by chartered building surveyor Martin Watson, the business has grown from the BIC’s coworking space into a riverside office as demand for its services increases.

Alongside traditional surveying work, the company is now offering property investment agency services aimed at helping landlords and investors manage an increasingly complex property landscape.

Martin said: “There are significant changes happening within the property investment market, and landlords are under more pressure than ever to be compliant.

“Our aim is to provide clear, professional advice that helps clients make confident decisions about their portfolios.”

Martin began his career as an apprentice electrician before retraining as a building surveyor and later working on major projects at the Houses of Parliament.

After graduating from Northumbria University in 2015 and achieving RICS chartership in 2019, he launched the business following several years working within the North East commercial property sector.

Martin says the move to larger premises is expected to support future growth while allowing the business to remain connected to the BIC’s wider entrepreneurial community.

He added: “One of the main reasons I’ve always come to the BIC is the sense of community.

“When you work for yourself, it’s easy to feel isolated, but here you’re surrounded by other businesses who are growing and facing similar challenges.”

Doreen Howard, centre manager at the North East BIC, added: “Martin’s story is a great example of how businesses can grow at the BIC.

“By providing flexible space and a collaborative environment, we’re able to support ambitious entrepreneurs develop sustainable businesses that contribute to regional growth.

“With demand increasing for professional, compliance-led property advice, Martin sees continued growth opportunities and plans to further develop the business in the coming months.”
