Doncaster Sheffield Airport expands ATC team

Doncaster Sheffield Airport has strengthened its air traffic control operation with a series of new appointments and technology investments as preparations continue for the airport’s reopening.

Multiple roles across air traffic control and air traffic services have now been filled, including nine trainee air traffic controllers currently undertaking tower and radar training.

The airport has also recruited experienced personnel from other major UK airports, with the department led by head of air traffic services Andy Hudson.

Many of the trainee positions have been filled by South Yorkshire residents entering the aviation industry, as FlyDoncaster Ltd invests in developing the next generation of air traffic control professionals amid a national skills shortage.

Alongside expanding the team, the airport has installed new air traffic services technology to support aircraft monitoring, operational readiness and training exercises ahead of reopening.

Andy Hudson, head of air traffic services at Doncaster Sheffield Airport, said: “I’d like to extend a warm welcome to all of our newest ATC hires.

“It’s essential we invest in the future of aviation, and I’m pleased we’re able to do this as we re-open Doncaster Sheffield Airport.

“We will continue to play our part in addressing the national shortage of ATC professionals in the country in the coming years.

“The fact we that have a mix of trainees and experienced staff members means that we have a very strong footing already, and it’s brilliant to see so much excitement, professionalism and knowledge from everybody involved.

“Safety and compliance are central to everything we do and this preparedness is invaluable as we look forward to building this team further in the coming months and years.”

Doncaster Sheffield Airport is preparing to reopen for freight operations in 2027 and passenger services in 2028, alongside wider investment in infrastructure upgrades and its ongoing airspace change process.

Simon Hinchley, executive director – airport operations at Doncaster Sheffield Airport, added: “It’s brilliant to have now hired many talented individuals to this critical airport department; and equally that we have invested in local skills as part of our focus on boosting the regional economy.

“The fact that we have installed new technology and refurbished our ATC tower too, making sure we are at the cutting edge of the industry, is also a step forward.

“This investment and commitment is crucial and we know that it sets the highest of standards as we work to make Doncaster Sheffield Airport operational again.”
