Construction firm builds book with flood scheme

A building sector contractor has bolstered its order book with work on a £3.1 million flood defence scheme.

Esh Construction is set to lead improvements on Whiston Brook, on the outskirts of Rotherham.

Bosses say the company will install new culverts, build a flood wall and create a water storage area on upstream farmland.

Further work will include reshaping the brook – which flows as a River Rother tributary through Whiston village – and upgrading road crossings to reduce water build-up.

The improvements come after significant flooding in previous years damaged homes, businesses and the road network.

Steven Garrigan, divisional director at Esh Construction, which is headquartered in Bowburn, near Durham City, said: “Whiston has experienced the very real impacts of flooding in recent years.

“This scheme will play a vital role in better protecting residents, businesses and local infrastructure.”

Esh Construction has been appointed by Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council to deliver the project.

Councillor Lynda Marshall, the authority’s cabinet member for street scene and green spaces, added: “This scheme is an important step in helping to reduce future flooding.

“It will help manage water during heavy rain and protect homes, businesses and local roads.”
