Ask Mrs Watson solves tech headaches

A technology specialist in Northumberland is helping small businesses and charities navigate IT, cyber security and data protection challenges through a flexible support membership service.

Kate Watson, from New Hartley, has launched Ask Mrs Watson, a business designed to provide practical, jargon-free advice to organisations that may lack the resources of larger companies but still face increasing digital risks and compliance requirements.

Drawing on more than 40 years’ experience in IT, software training and data protection, Kate has worked with organisations ranging from international shipping firms and insurance companies to charities, hotels and dental practices.

She said: “The data protection side and the software training side really go hand in hand.

“If people feel more confident using technology, they are less likely to make mistakes or click on something they shouldn’t.

“If somebody sends me an Excel worksheet that isn’t behaving properly, I won’t just fix it and send it back.

“I’ll explain what I did and how I did it so they can feel more confident doing it themselves in future.”

The idea for Ask Mrs Watson emerged from years of clients asking for ongoing support whenever technology issues arose.

Kate first registered the Ask Mrs Watson domain in 2010 and has since developed the concept into a membership service offering help with everything from spreadsheets and email systems to online meetings, cyber security and data protection.

Members, known as “The Askers”, can choose from Bronze, Silver and Gold packages, with support ranging from unlimited email assistance to dedicated monthly consultancy sessions.

Rather than simply solving problems, Kate focuses on helping clients understand the technology they use.

Kate added: “Having somebody trusted in your corner can make all the difference.

“People want truthful, honest answers without jargon or judgement.”

One of Kate’s clients, Fiona Pallister from Durham Christian Partnership, added: “Kate supported our charity initially with our GDPR compliance and now with our IT software training. It has been great working with Kate, she has really supported extending our knowledge, implementing new policies, and all with her infectious enthusiasm and positivity.”

Alongside running the business, Kate presents a weekly technology programme on Radio Northumberland, where she continues to share advice and support with the local community.

She added: “I absolutely fell in love with community radio.

“I really enjoy talking to people and hearing their stories almost as much as I love helping with people’s tech issues.”
