Metro just the ticket for newlyweds
A Gateshead couple have put a unique twist on their wedding day by choosing public transport over a traditional wedding car for their journey to the altar.
Laura and Aaron Capon travelled on the Tyne and Wear Metro to Newcastle Civic Centre, where they tied the knot after taking inspiration from a growing trend in New York.
The newlyweds made the journey from Gateshead to Haymarket in full wedding attire, delighting fellow passengers who stopped to congratulate them along the way.
Rather than arriving in a chauffeur-driven vehicle, the couple embraced the everyday bustle of Metro travel as part of their celebrations, creating a memorable start to their wedding day.
Laura, who runs a social media business, documented the experience on her food and lifestyle Instagram channel, @geordie.scran.
The video has already attracted more than 150,000 views.
The idea was inspired by a trend emerging in New York, where couples are increasingly choosing the city’s iconic subway system as part of their wedding celebrations.
It has become increasingly popular among couples looking for a more spontaneous, personal and cost-effective alternative to traditional wedding transport and venues.
Laura said: “It was really good fun getting the Metro to our wedding. We both loved it. It is something a bit different.
“I had seen the trend over in New York where couples are swapping the more picture-perfect settings for the subway, and in some cases, they actually get married on the train.
“We really wanted to recreate that, but on our own Metro system here.
“I wanted the most Newcastle way possible to get married, so the Metro really had to play a part on the day.
“We opted to travel to and from the register office with just our videographer in tow.
“A few passengers were coming over to say congratulations, which was lovely.
“I even had messages from people after the wedding saying that they had seen us on the train.
“It really was a case of from the Metro to matrimony.”
Aaron added: “I loved getting the Metro to the wedding. It was a memorable experience.
“It was a Friday morning so there were still people on the train heading to work and university.
“It brought a smile to people’s faces.
“We were in our own little bubble that morning, but it was great that so many people came over and said we had helped to make their day.”
Metro operator Nexus welcomed the couple on board, with the journey providing an unusual but fitting backdrop to a day centred on doing things a little differently.
For Laura and Aaron, it proved that sometimes the best route to married life is by Metro.
Lynne Dickinson, station delivery manager at Nexus, added: “It was great to welcome Laura and Aaron on board on their wedding day.
“The new Metro trains were a perfect way to travel.
“It was a short trip from Gateshead to Haymarket, but it certainly caught the attention of other customers, who all looked thrilled.
“Our heartfelt congratulations to the happy couple and we wish them every health happiness for their future together as man and wife.”
