Merchant Adventurers appoint new governor
York-based charitable membership organisation the Company of Merchant Adventurers of the City of York has appointed Professor Sarah Brown as governor for 2026-27.
A former deputy governor, Professor Brown will lead the organisation as chair of trustees, overseeing its committees and representing more than 170 members.
She will also support the company’s work promoting enterprise, preserving the historic Merchant Adventurers’ Hall and encouraging future generations of entrepreneurs.
Professor Brown joins the role with extensive experience in the heritage and conservation sector.
A professor in the University of York’s Department of History of Art, she previously served as director of the York Glaziers Trust, where she led the conservation of York Minster’s historic stained glass collection.
Professor Brown’s appointment coincides with the promotion of Jenni Bartram to junior warden, further strengthening the leadership team as the organisation continues its work supporting business, heritage and the wider York community.
Jim Richardson, clerk of the Merchant Adventurers, said: “Professor Sarah Brown’s appointment as governor marks a significant moment for the company.
“Her exceptional leadership in the heritage sector, academic excellence, combined with her civic commitment to the city of York, makes her ideally placed to guide our work in supporting enterprise, preserving our historic legacy, and contributing to York’s continued economic development.
“We are confident that under her guidance, the Merchant Adventurers’ will continue to play a vital role in supporting business, nurturing talent and contributing to the economic and cultural life of York.”
