CIPP appoints new board chair
The Chartered Institute of Payroll Professionals (CIPP) has appointed Brian Sparling as chair of its board, bringing more than 25 years of payroll leadership experience to the role.
Brian began his payroll career in 2001 and has since held senior leadership positions with organisations including Sky Group, J D Wetherspoon and TSB Bank.
His experience spans global payroll operations, systems transformation and major legislative changes, including Real Time Information and auto-enrolment.
A Chartered Member of the CIPP, Brian joined the board in 2024 and has played an active role in supporting the profession and strengthening industry engagement.
He succeeds Clare Warrington as chair and will work closely with the institute’s leadership team to support its strategic priorities, member engagement and continued growth.
Brian said: “Payroll is a profession that never stands still and that’s one of the things I’ve always loved about it.
“Whether it’s technology, legislation or changing ways of working, payroll professionals are constantly adapting while continuing to deliver one of the most critical functions within any organisation.
“The CIPP plays a vital role in supporting those professionals through education, standards and advocacy, and I’m incredibly proud to take on the role of chair at such an important time for the profession.”
Brian added: “The board is there to ensure the organisation is performing effectively and to support and guide the chief executive and senior leadership team.
“It’s important that our members understand we’re not nameless, faceless individuals who only appear for quarterly meetings.
“We’re payroll professionals ourselves with careers, operational experience and a genuine passion for supporting pay professionals and championing the industry.”
Brian’s appointment reinforces the CIPP’s commitment to championing the payroll profession and supporting its members across the UK.
Jason Davenport, chief executive of the CIPP, added: “Brian brings extensive operational payroll experience, strategic insight and a genuine passion for the profession to the role of chair.
“His longstanding commitment to the CIPP and the wider payroll community makes him exceptionally well placed to support the Institute through its next phase of growth and development.”
