Former council leader appointed Durham mayor
Durham County Council has appointed councillor Amanda Hopgood as mayor of Durham for 2026/27, marking the latest chapter in a local government career spanning more than two decades.
Amanda previously made history as the first woman to lead Durham County Council, serving as council leader from 2021 to 2025.
She has represented the Newton Hall area since the formation of the unitary authority in 2009 and has also served as a parish and district councillor.
During her mayoral year, Amanda plans to support Durham-based charities Point North and St Cuthbert’s Hospice through fundraising and community engagement activities.
Born and raised in Durham City, Amanda spent more than 20 years working for Halifax before becoming a full-time councillor.
She will be supported in her civic duties by her husband, Neil Hopgood, while councillor Eric Mavin has been appointed deputy mayor for 2026/27.
Councillor Hopgood said: “I am extremely honoured to become the mayor of Durham.
“It is an amazing privilege to serve as Mayor of my home city.
“I’m looking forward to working with many organisations and groups over the coming year, meeting our amazing residents, visitors and businesses as well as raising funds for my chosen charities to help them continue their vital work.”
