Storage firm powers off-grid future

A North East self-storage company is advancing its net-zero ambitions after launching its first fully off-grid facility powered by renewable energy.

Pink Storage has unveiled the milestone at its Washington site, which opened earlier this year as the company’s 25th UK location.

The 35,000sq ft facility features 220 storage units and now operates entirely without a connection to the national electricity grid.

The site is powered through a combination of solar panels, battery energy storage and backup generator technology, enabling it to generate and store its own electricity while improving resilience against power outages and rising energy costs.

Pink Storage has invested £40,000 in the renewable energy system, which includes 12 solar panels and battery storage capable of holding 72 kWh of energy.

Bosses say they expect the installation to reduce annual energy costs while lowering carbon emissions.

Scott Evans, chief executive of Pink Storage, said: “This is a major step forward for us and the industry.

“The project supports our environmental ambitions and demonstrates how businesses can take control of their energy needs while delivering long-term operational savings.”

The off-grid project builds on a wider £1.2 million investment in the Washington facility, which serves customers across Washington, Newcastle, Durham and Sunderland.

Following the success of the scheme, Pink Storage plans to introduce similar renewable energy systems across its wider portfolio as part of its long-term commitment to sustainable growth and net-zero operations.

Scott added: “The Washington site shows how renewable technology can be successfully integrated into self-storage facilities while supporting wider net-zero ambitions.”
