Port operator 'set for new heights' with crane move

A port operator says it is primed to reach new operational heights following a £5.4 million crane investment.

PD Ports has added a third giant electric-hydraulic hoist to its Teesport base.

Bosses say it will bolster the trade hub’s ability “to handle a wider range of bulk and breakbulk commodities, reduce emissions and respond quickly to customer demand”.

They add the crane – known as a Liebherr LPS 550 – complements two identical models introduced in 2023 and represents a combined £8.6 million outlay.

The operator has also bought new grabs, which include scrap metal apparatus that will increase handling capacity from 7.5 cubic metres to 17 cubic metres per grab.

Grant Honzik, business unit director – bulks, said: “This significantly strengthens our bulk handling capability and supports growing demand as customers increasingly recognise Tees Dock as a flexible, high-capacity hub for bulk commodities, project cargo and specialist lifts.”

Frans Calje, PD Ports’ chief executive, added: “This underlines our long‑term commitment to Teesport and to building a truly world‑class facility for the region.

“By investing in high‑performance infrastructure, we are strengthening Teesport’s role in supporting the offshore sector and playing a leading role in the UK’s national decarbonisation ambitions.”
