HJCE to support bus station revamp
An engineering firm has secured a contract to support the transformation of a West Yorkshire transport hub.
HJ Consulting Engineers will provide engineering and technical consultancy services to main contractor Lindum Construction on the £27 million redevelopment of Huddersfield Bus Station.
The Wakefield-based firm will support the project’s wider construction programme, which is being delivered in partnership with Kirklees Council.
The scheme forms part of wider plans to improve public transport connectivity across West Yorkshire, led by the council and West Yorkshire Combined Authority.
Planned upgrades include a new-look interior, real-time travel information, improved accessibility, cycle stands, upgraded public spaces and refreshed entrances and exits.
The development will also include a sweeping entrance canopy featuring a living roof of grasses and wildflowers, alongside 96 solar panels to generate electricity.
Upperhead Row car park, located above the bus station, will also be modernised with structural improvements, upgraded lighting, new safety systems and enhanced ramps.
Andrew Fairburn, managing director of HJ Consulting Engineers, said: “Our involvement reflects the challenges of the construction environment, providing engineering solutions that will allow the bus station to remain operational during the redevelopment phase while allowing accessibility to the bus station environment for all users.”
Gary Allen, construction director at Lindum Construction, added: “It’s great to be working with HJCE, who are providing a high-quality solution for a complex engineering problem.
“Their expertise will go a long way to help deliver a much-needed, first-class public transport facility for the people of Huddersfield.”
