Higgins to deliver Camden estate regeneration
A north London estate regeneration scheme is moving forward after a development partner was appointed to deliver its first phase of affordable homes.
Camden Council has appointed Higgins Partnerships to deliver phase one of the West Kentish Town Estate redevelopment, which forms part of a wider programme to create 850 new homes, including 325 council homes.
The first phase will deliver 52 affordable homes across two six-storey blocks, with 48 social-rented homes for returning council residents and four homes for existing leaseholders.
Designed by Mae Architects, the phase will include a mix of one to four-bedroom homes, including family maisonettes.
Declan Higgins, chief executive of Higgins Group, said: “We are pleased to be appointed by Camden Council to deliver the first phase of this important regeneration programme for West Kentish Town.
“We are committed to delivering these homes sensitively and collaboratively, creating a strong foundation for the wider redevelopment of the estate.
“Alongside providing high-quality, affordable homes, we will work closely with the local community to create training, employment and social value opportunities that provide lasting benefits for residents and support the long-term success of the area.”
The wider masterplan, prepared by Alford Hall Monaghan Morris, sets out proposals for new homes, improved open space, better connectivity and enhanced public realm.
The regeneration has followed more than ten years of engagement with residents and neighbours.
In a 2020 ballot, 93 per cent of residents voted in favour of full estate regeneration.
The project forms part of Camden’s Community Investment Programme and will replace outdated blocks with modern, energy-efficient family homes, alongside new play areas and open spaces.
Councillor Nasrine Djemai, cabinet member for new homes and community investment at Camden Council, added: “The redevelopment of West Kentish Town estate will allow us to build the much needed safer and larger homes residents on the estate have asked for and deserve.
“This includes more than 850 new homes, of which 320 will be council homes, alongside a range of improvements to the local area including new outdoor play areas and open spaces.
“We are pleased to appoint Higgins Partnerships to help us in this next step of delivering this project which will make a huge difference for families currently living in overcrowded conditions and in need of spacious, new, good quality homes.”
