Boxing gym helps build more than muscle
A Newcastle-based fitness entrepreneur is helping people build confidence, improve wellbeing and develop new skills through an inclusive approach to boxing training.
Box&Build was founded by Matt McKenna after a personal transformation that saw him overcome a lack of confidence and direction through dedication to fitness and boxing.
Seven years ago, aged 20, Matt began a journey to improve both his physical and mental health.
Through consistent training and discipline, he lost a significant amount of weight and developed a newfound sense of self-belief.
Even during lockdown restrictions, he continued training in his garage and outdoors to maintain his progress.
Matt, pictured with his dad below, said: “I wasn’t in the shape I wanted to be in, and I wasn’t the confident person I knew I could be.
“Boxing became the tool I used to build myself into the man I always aspired to be.”
A key driving force behind Matt’s journey has been his father, who introduced him to the gym environment from a young age.
“My dad took me into the gym when I was about 10 or 11.
“We weren’t training seriously, but he called it building good habits, just getting used to being in that environment.
“Even now, he’s in great shape and takes real pride in looking after himself,”
“He taught me that exercise isn’t optional it’s a non-negotiable part of life.
“No matter how busy you are, you must make time for yourself.
“That’s stuck with me ever since.”
Matt’s commitment paid off when he stepped into the ring after restrictions eased, winning three consecutive fights across three weekends and strengthening his passion for the sport.
Inspired by his own experiences, Matt launched Box&Build in Gosforth with the aim of making boxing more accessible.
The gym was created to challenge the intimidating reputation often associated with traditional boxing environments, offering a supportive space for people of all abilities.
Matt added: “When I walked into a boxing gym for the first time I left with a black eye and concussion.
“I can laugh now, but it was a traumatic experience, and it puts a lot of people off for life.
“I felt intimidated, experienced poor results in the gyms I visited and found that there was no real coaching in boxfit classes.
“We sit between the extremes.
“You’ll learn how to box properly and defend yourself, but you’ll feel safe, supported and empowered while doing it.”
Based on Salters Road in central Gosforth, the facility combines authentic boxing training with strength and conditioning programmes.
Designed with a heritage boxing aesthetic, it features a full-size boxing ring, dedicated strength training area and classic fight memorabilia.
Training is delivered through small group sessions and one-to-one coaching, allowing members to receive tailored guidance while developing their skills and fitness.
Matt added: “We keep sessions small because that’s how people truly progress.
“This isn’t about packing people into big classes; it’s about delivering real, lasting results.”
Since opening, Box&Build has established a growing community of members from a range of backgrounds and experience levels.
The gym has attracted an even split of male and female members, reflecting its focus on creating an inclusive environment without the need for separate sessions.
While Box&Build does train competitive fighters, most members join for personal development.
Matt added: “This is for anyone who wants to feel more confident walking into a room.
“That’s something everyone deserves and it’s something I didn’t have at 20.”
“Women feel safe and empowered training alongside the guys here.
“It’s about creating an environment where everyone can grow and we’re looking forward to welcoming new members.”
Matt’s vision for the business is rooted in the positive impact boxing had on his own life, helping people not only improve their fitness but also develop greater confidence, resilience and self-belief.
He adds: “I’ve never been more confident or comfortable in myself.
“Now I want to pass that on to others.”
