University in six-figure defence skills boost

A higher education provider has secured nearly £1 million to support moves aimed at strengthening the UK’s defence sector.

Teesside University has been backed by the Ministry of Defence.

Bosses say the cash will boost the country’s defence workforce and strengthen skills development.

They add the £973,000 pot will support a range of undergraduate courses covering subjects including cybersecurity, computer science, artificial intelligence and aerospace, civil and mechanical and electrical engineering.

The cash will also be used to buy collaborative robotic workstations and mobile robotics platforms, with plans in place to boost employer and industry relations through activities including guest lectures and live project briefs.

Professor Chrisina Jayne, pro vice-chancellor (global engagement and partnerships), said: “This funding is a significant endorsement of our strength in delivering high-quality, industry-focused education and our commitment to supporting the UK’s critical skills needs.

“By working closely with employers and partners, we will ensure our graduates are equipped with the advanced skills and experience needed to contribute to the future of the UK’s defence industry.”

The funding forms part of a wider programme aimed at strengthening the UK’s defence capabilities, with £80 million committed to 24 universities and higher education institutions over three years.
