Inspiring Big Dreams: We Are Zenith Returns to Mortimer Primary School
Last week, members of the We Are Zenith team headed back to Mortimer Primary School to take part in a careers and STEM event with one of the school’s year groups — and for the second year running, it was one of the highlights of our community calendar.
The event came about through our ongoing partnership with the North East Combined Authority (NECA). Last year, we delivered a similar project with NECA that connected local businesses with primary school pupils, giving them a first taste of the world of work and the huge variety of careers on their doorstep. It went down so well that NECA paired us with Mortimer Primary again this year — and we’re already booked in to return in 2027.
This kind of early careers exposure is part of a wider, proven approach. Programmes like the Careers & Enterprise Company’s Start Small; Dream Big pilot have shown that children start forming ideas about “who does what job” surprisingly early, and that meeting real people in real careers helps broaden those horizons before stereotypes take hold.
To make the day as rich as possible, we invited some of the brilliant businesses we work with to get involved: Heron Financial, Magna, and Waterman Aspen all sent colleagues along to run hands-on tasks with the children, giving them a glimpse into sectors from finance to engineering.
Rhys from Waterman Aspen summed up the day perfectly:
”Honestly, I loved it! The school staff and the kids were all lovely to us. The work you all do is excellent, wish I had access to things like this when I was a kid!”
The event was led by Val, our safeguarding lead at We Are Zenith, who spoke about why this work matters so much:
''Supporting primary school pupils to broaden their awareness of careers is vital. It helps them understand the key skills and behaviours needed for different roles, building early aspirations. Bringing in businesses from a wide range of sectors to take part in these events is equally important, as it gives pupils valuable insight into the world of work and the variety of opportunities available to them."
For We Are Zenith, days like this are exactly why we do what we do. Whether it’s recruitment, apprenticeships, or workforce development, we believe that opportunity should start as early as possible, which means showing up in our local schools, not just our local businesses.
A huge thank you to Mortimer Primary School, NECA, and our partners Heron Financial, Magna, and Waterman Aspen for making the day such a success. We can’t wait to do it all again next year.
