Architect boosts book with college campus project
An architectural practice has strengthened its order book with education sector work.
Howarth Litchfield is working with Kendal College to create a town centre campus.
Bosses say the venture will transform part of Kendal’s Westmorland Shopping Centre into a learning hub.
They add the work - the third phase of a wider development programme - will create digital media and performance spaces, as well as IT hubs and a mock health ward, which will stand above the Cumbrian retail base’s ground floor that counts Greggs and O2 among its tenants.
The first facilities are expected to be completed ahead of the September academic year, with further handovers planned for December and Easter next year.
Dave Pickersgill, technical director at Howarth Litchfield, which is based on the outskirts of Durham City, said: “These works are required to address the urgent need for more space.
“Between 2001 and 2021, the number of full-time learners between 16 and 18 tripled from 405 to more than 1300, and the new Westmorland campus will accommodate around 450 students.
“The project is not without its challenges, as we will be working within a ‘live’ environment, managing construction above an operational shopping centre and alongside an active college campus.”
Sinéad Kay, Kendal College chief operating officer and chief financial officer, added: “We are committed to cementing the college’s place at the heart of the town and its community.
“We are delighted with the way the project is progressing and look forward to being able to offer students a high-quality environment in which to study.”
The contract comes after Howarth Litchfield revealed a partnership with Ward Group Investments to create a “multi-million-pound” 45-studio apartment project in Durham City.
Officials say the endeavour will include a gym and cinema room alongside kitchen and living space.
