Builders' merchant expands Billingham hub

A builders’ merchant has expanded operations in a bid to secure future growth.

James Burrell has opened a warehouse and completed a 1.3-acre extension to the external yard at its Billingham branch.

Bosses say the move will enable the family-owned business to stock a wider range of building products.

The investment forms part of the company’s five-year strategic plan and follows the closure of its Blyth and Bishop Auckland branches in 2024 and 2025, respectively.

Staff affected by the Bishop Auckland closure were redeployed to Teesside sites, helping support the continued growth of the Billingham operation.

Established in 1877, James Burrell - which is listed in the 2026 NET 250 directory of top 250 North East businesses by turnover - is preparing to celebrate its 150th anniversary next year.

The firm, now led by the next generation of the Burrell family alongside managing director Mark Richardson, has continued to invest in technology, logistics and operational efficiency.

Recent accounts showed turnover increased to £96.3 million in the year to October 2025, up from £95.1 million, while EBITDA rose significantly from £0.5 million to £2.1 million.

The company also joined the Fortis buying group, introduced a new ERP system, maintained FORS Silver accreditation and invested in four new HGVs.

Although construction activity remains subdued, directors say the business has responded by aligning its operations with market conditions while continuing to invest for the future.

They add the company expects the positive momentum to continue, with forecasts indicating a further improvement in financial performance during 2026.
