'Transformational' retail revamp gathers pace
A town centre regeneration scheme has reached a construction milestone.
A groundbreaking ceremony has marked the start of the next phase of the £19.9 million redevelopment of the Priory Shopping Centre in Worksop, following completion of the demolition phase.
The project is being delivered by Midlands contractor G F Tomlinson on behalf of Bassetlaw District Council, with £17.9 million of Government funding alongside a £2 million council contribution.
It is being procured through The Medium Works Framework, managed by Pagabo on behalf of The Education Alliance.
Council representatives joined project partners, including G F Tomlinson, Pagabo, Beyond Consult, Anotherkind Architects and Gleeds, to celebrate the latest milestone.
Andy Sewards, chairman of G F Tomlinson, added: “The groundbreaking ceremony represents a proud moment for everyone involved in this transformational project and demonstrates the collaborative working approach that has brought us to this stage.
“Following the successful completion of the demolition works, it is exciting to see construction now progressing on site and the vision for the future of The Priory Centre beginning to take shape.”
Councillor Julie Leigh, leader of Bassetlaw District Council, added: “The change is already remarkable, and the true scale of the project is becoming clear.
“It is exciting to see the foundations being laid for a new destination that will help to revitalise the high street and complement the impact we are already making.”
Construction is now underway on a transformed town centre destination featuring a climbing wall, indoor adventure play area and bowling alley.
Public spaces will also be refreshed, while a new pedestrian bridge over the Chesterfield Canal will create an improved gateway into the development.
Elliott Talbot, senior category manager at Pagabo, added: “It’s fantastic to see construction progressing on this important regeneration project following the successful completion of the demolition phase.”
Purchased by Bassetlaw District Council in 2023, the Priory Centre redevelopment forms a key part of the authority's wider regeneration strategy, with the completed scheme expected to increase footfall, strengthen the town centre economy and create a more attractive destination for residents and visitors alike.
