Airport tees up charity golf day

A South Yorkshire airport is launching its annual charity fundraising programme with a golf day supporting two local causes.

Doncaster Sheffield Airport will host the event on August 17 at Styrrup Hall Golf & Country Club, marking its first charity fundraiser since plans to reopen the airport were announced.

More than 50 employees voted to select The Eve Merton Dreams Trust and Mayflower Sanctuary as the airport’s charity partners for the coming year.

Up to 24 teams of four players will take part in the golf day, with funds raised supporting the two organisations.

Shane Berry, head of health, safety and fire safety at Doncaster Sheffield Airport, who is organising the charity golf day, said: “We’re pleased to be supporting two brilliant Doncaster charities by hosting an activity for others in the area to get involved with and give back.

“Our ambition is to be the heart of the community and it’s great to be able to tee off with this first event.”

Martin Lawrence, of Eve Merton Dreams Trust, added: “As a charity, we are so incredibly proud to be connected to the Doncaster Sheffield Airport.

“We’re very much a community charity, operating to help Doncaster families impacted by cancer, and the airport is at the hub of that community.

“We’re excited to work closely with all involved and hope the airport’s success can raise some valuable awareness of our work at Eves Trust and the positive impact we hope to have for many years to come.

“Thank you so much for selecting us to be part of this journey.”

Jennie Foxall-Lord, of Mayflower Sanctuary, added: “We’re incredibly proud to be supported by Doncaster Sheffield Airport as a charity partner.

“This partnership is a fantastic opportunity to bring the South Yorkshire community together through a wonderful calendar of events.

“The airport is a focal point for our region.

“By hosting these community activities rescue dogs and cats in our care are given a vital platform.

“Every bit of involvement from the public will directly help Mayflower Sanctuary.”

The event follows another milestone in the airport’s reopening plans after it successfully passed the first two stages of the Airspace Change Proposal process.

Organised by FlyDoncaster Ltd, the golf day is expected to be the first of a series of fundraising activities planned over the next 12 months as employees work to raise money and awareness for their chosen charities while the airport continues preparations for its return to operation.

Christian Foster, director at FlyDoncaster, added: “I’m delighted that we have two amazing local causes to get behind for the year, as voted for by our staff team.

“As we grow and build momentum, we’re keen to make sure that everybody here has chance to get involved with community initiatives.

“Working at Doncaster Sheffield Airport is exciting and rewarding and this is just one area we’re passionate about building into our culture.”
