Historic joiner top of class with £1.1 million contract

A 166-year-old construction contractor has added another chapter to its extensive order book with £1.1 million education work.

Manners has refurbished Bishop Auckland College’s campus.

The project saw the business create a new fitness suite, expand a food court and deliver a revamped student services hub, a reception area, store, coffee shop and learning spaces.

Bosses at the Bishop Auckland-based firm say the work will help “increase capacity while creating facilities that reflect the quality of education on offer”.

Simon Manners, managing director at Manners – which was founded by Thomas Manners in 1860 and built Sopwith Camel fighter aircraft wings during the First World War – said: “Education projects are about creating environments that inspire learning, support wellbeing and provide opportunities for future generations to thrive.

“We are proud to have worked with Bishop Auckland College on a project that will benefit students, staff and the wider community for years to come.”

Shaun Hope, Bishop Auckland College Group principal and chief executive, added: “We are thrilled with the refurbishment work.

“It is great to have a local company supporting us as we modernise the student experience.

“Not only did they meet our high standards, but we also found a company that is loyal to its local area.”
